Dr Saidu Bangura has been an Assistant Professor at the University of Cabo Verde from 2016 to date. He lectures in the English Studies Course, Faculty of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, where he has directed the Masters in English Studies: Linguistics and English Language Teaching, a new academic program he helped build at the University of Cabo Verde. He has also coordinated Languages and Literature in the Scientific Council of the university from 2019 to 2024. Dr. Saidu Bangura is currently the Vice President/Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, University of Cabo Verde. He taught English as a Foreign Language at Pedro Gomes Secondary School, Praia, from 2000 to 2007; English for Specific Purposes at the Jean Piaget University of Cabo Verde, Praia, a private university, from 2005 to 2007. From 2009 to 2016, Dr. Bangura was a full-time Assistant Professor at the Jean Piaget University of Cabo Verde where he promoted and coordinated the Translation and Intercultural Studies Course, a program he helped build, and served as Director/Dean of the Science and Technology Unit, from August 1, 2012, to April 30, 2014. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and Linguistics from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, and a PhD in Translation, Communication and Culture with a specialty in English Linguistics from the University of Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain. He is an Accredited Experienced Researcher at the University of Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain, where he serves as an External Evaluator/Examiner in the DELLCOS Doctoral Program (PhD in Linguistic and Literary Studies in their Socio-Cultural Contexts). Aside from his academic interests and busy schedule, Dr Saidu Bangura is the President of the General Assembly of the Platform for African Communities in Cabo Verde, an NGO that congregates 16 African Community Associations. The Platform for African Communities fights for and promotes the rights of all African migrants in Cabo Verde. He is a founding member of Grassroots Action for National Development (GRAND), a registered NGO in Sierra Leone. Besides his academic research and publications, Dr Bangura has published poems (in English, Portuguese, and Cabo Verdean Creole) in newspapers, educational books, and poetry anthologies. He has two anthologies of poems to be published by mid-next year: A Bit of Me: A Fragment of Hope and From the ‘Province of Freedom’ to the Enigmas of Nowheresville. Dr Bangura speaks five languages fluently: Temne, Sierra Leone Krio, English, Cabo Verdean Creole, and Portuguese, and can understand Spanish very well, and has intermediate communication skills in Spanish. He is a regional expert in translation and an international translation consultant. He has done a consultancy job with UNIDO: from April to July 2023.
